I am a mother, but before that
I was a child, a daughter, a sister and friend.
I am a mother, and have been
from the very first moment I felt you move.
I am a mother, with babies. My world revolves
around taking care of them and getting enough sleep.
I am a mother, with young children.
I feel guilty every time I leave for work.
I am a mother with teenagers. When I talk to them they roll their eyes at me.
I bounce between loving them and feeling hurt.
I am a mother attending my child’s graduation ceremony,
I am proud. My heart is full and close to bursting.
I am a mother in a house that is suddenly to big. I hear
my children’s voice echoing ghost-like, in the hallways.
I am a mother, with no one to mother. I pick up the phone,
then hang it up. I don’t like feeling needy or intrusive.
I am a mother in a strange land. When I call for no reason,
it’s because I miss you.
I am a mother, in transition. I will make mistakes.
Please be patient with me.
I am a mother with grown children,
who have children, of their own.
I am a mother …
who has come full circle and now – I am me.
